Game Background: Reno changed a lot over the course of the little over half a year he was on the MS Elegante, and while he very much so stayed a Turk there were a number of things that shook his view of the world and the way it operated. Finding yourself surrounded by people from other worlds on a massive ruise ship with nobody but Vincent Valentine from back home isn't the best way to find yourself learning that your entire world was destroyed and the people on this ship are the survivors.

Foolishly calling out Ganondorf for a fight isn't the best way to deal with the conflicting emotions over killing a few thousand people either, and it resulted in Reno's first death. It was a swift and brutal lesson about how there are more powerful things and people he's never seen or encountered around them, and acting like a jackass won't help the situation. Even with Veld's arrival, he didn't change his actions.

Dying, however, sometimes has a strange effect on people. Reno, still dealing with the moral fallout of what he'd done back home, and the part of him that had problems with the less savory details of being a Turk asked Vincent whether or not this meant he could stop being one. Death, as any of them knew, was the only way a Turk could ever leave and in his moments of needing some sort of confirmation of his usefulness to the man lashed out at Tseng. It didn't go well, to say the least but they shortly made up and all was well. Until Tseng left the boat anyway.

Over the course of the next few months a number of events continued to change Reno's viewpoints and how he acted towards others. Veld's Fight Club helped channel his anger, and his slowly budding relationship with Catpaw (a Mithra) slowly helped him soften and begin to relax. He also made rather good friends with Jinx, bonding over explosives and alcohol. He took the elf under his wing after Terrible Decisions were made on the other's part, and he saw a lot of himself in the guy.

Reno's relationship with Vincent over the course of their stay on the Elegante is, perhaps, the most indicative of his changes as a person. Initially knowing very little about the man other than that he had been a Turk thirty years prior, and as the only person from Reno's world he didn't really leave the immortal gunner alone. While this nearly resulted in his death early on the two found something of a friendship (in Reno's opinion anyway) and Vincent was dubbed "Spooks" by the redhead. What truly cemented their relationship was when they switched bodies.

Reno, never one to hold back his feelings or let what he was thinking go unsaid was quickly overwhelmed by Chaos and his own insecurities about being left behind. While killing people in his way wasn't an issue to Reno, that it was on his way to try to kill Veld and Vincent did. This was a lesson in tempering his emotions, and deepened his kinship with Vincent on a level neither of them were ever comfortable putting words to.

Reno's second death was, if anything, the most obvious display of his change over the course of the game. Doing something noble and dying for a mission was something he'd never do if he hadn't grown to regard others as worthwhile (that death wasn't permanent was also a major factor in that decision).

The end of the game was an interesting time for Reno. Attacks from homicidal cardinals, a return of people's weapons, and a literal fight for their lives was involved. The End, the massive being who was responsible for destroying their worlds attacked the ship, and despite even using Rude's appearance against Reno they all still won.

Victory, however, came at a steep price it seemed. Arriving at The Golden Shore, the MS Elegante's destination, at last revealed that there had also been a battle there. Where everyone who'd ever left the ship had been slaughtered. Seeing a destroyed town was bad enough, but the fact that Reno saw himself, Rude and Tseng dead was enough to finally break the Turk's hope that it had all been worth something.

Personality: Reno often comes across as a lazy, disrespectful, no-good punk with an ego the size of Bahamut himself. He's just as likely to reply with sarcasm as he is to roll his eyes and not give a damn about whatever's going on you think is more important than what he's doing. Events of his days on the Elegante tempered a lot of this in to a somewhat more restrained demeanor. He's still flippant and disrespectful, but he's learned to tread cautiously around those from other worlds.

A lot of it is, however, what he wants you to see while he's checking to see if you're carrying a weapon or scoping out an escape route in case the situation goes to hell in a handbasket. Beneath the casual, sloppy appearance and demeanor is a professional "deskworker assassin", he didn't become Tseng's second in command because of his witty repartee or good looks. He is more than capable of taking charge of a situation and doing what's necessary to make it successful.

Reno has come to realize that being attached to people isn't always a bad thing. While seeing them hurt or die is painful, there's a lot of good that comes of it. Strangers are more willing to help and listen to you if you have enough people who genuinely like you. They're also willing to fight alongside you, even though you're from different worlds.

There are things, Reno has realized, that don't matter in life that he once thought did. Things like how good someone is in a fight, or what they're capable of doing don't matter so much as their potential. Home and the things from there are less important than knowing how to improvise with what you have, and to have all of the information. Listening to and actually following the advice from people who've been somewhere longer than you is, in fact, a highly advisable course of action. Working with people, even if you would rather see them die a slow death, is the best way to survive in strange locations. Garnerin loyalty and stepping up to the plate in a crisis are infinitely more valuable to him now than his more individualistic talents, he's become accepting of those outside of the Turks as teammates. He may not trust them on the same level at first, but he's willing to work with them towards mutual goals.

Reno's morals are, admittedly, still skewed. If he has to hurt someone to get his point across he's unbothered by it, and if taking a life is what it takes then so be it. Despite a cold outlook on the ways of the world and a sadistic streak to help it along, Reno is not without a heart. He genuinely cares about his fellow man, and if it doesn't mean putting him at a disadvantage he's willing to be nice and not step on the flowers.

Abilities: Reno is competent at various weapons though has become an expert at wielding the EMR (Electro-Mag Rod) which is something of a cross between a taser and a nightstick. He is also skilled at hand-to-hand combat and thinking quickly. He is quick on his feet and nimble enough to scale two story buildings with some level of effort. He has been trained in various covert operations and protocols including but not limited to bodyguarding, interrogation, torture, assassination, kidnapping, precision (and not so precision) demolitions and piloting of small aircraft.

He also has discovered that he is, indeed, not quite the average human. Pyramid, a decidedly unique trick of his is apparently not normal magic for someone from Gaia as it doesn't come from a materia nor does it take any energy for him to summon. Curious indeed, especially for those who know a thing or two about magic and Blue Mages.
